IBS symptoms vary with from one individual to another. Not all common symptoms are indicative of IBS. As such IBS treatments will vary. Common IBS symptoms include stomach cramping, abdominal pains and flatulence; other IBS symptoms are discomfort while passing stools, erratic stool patterns and stool quality. Some people experience diarrhea with blood and mucus while others suffer from constipation and gas. In most cases IBS symptoms are often characterized by flare ups and remissions. Sometimes over time, these symptoms worsen and become crippling compromising quality of life.

Common triggers for IBS symptoms include unhealthy food bingeing, onset of menstrual cycle and intolerance or allergic reactions to certain foods.

Hypnotherapy has been used to treat IBS symptoms with good results. If constipation is an issue, fiber supplements are helpful for enhancing regularity. If IBS symptoms present as abdominal pains and cramps, peppermint oil is a good remedy as it acts as a natural antispasmodic. Enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules that release their content in the lower intestine are often prescribed to alleviate symptoms as they act as effective muscular relaxants. Sometimes, calcium supplementation is helpful but it is unknown why calcium improves symptoms. Overall, IBS symptoms can be avoided by reducing intake of gas-producing foods like beans, prunes, cabbage, etc. Also, go easy on very hot and spicy foods and caffeine-rich coffee, teas, guarana drinks and chocolate to improve your IBS symptoms.
